Harran

The name of the district, which is 48 km away from Şanlıurfa city center, etymologically means "the place where roads meet", "junction" in ancient civilizations. The word "Harranu" in the Akkadian language, which is a Asian language, means "Travel and Caravan". When thought sociologically and historically, it means the City Where Civilizations Were Born and Met. Harran should be perceived, understood and recognized not only with the town center but also with its surroundings and even the plain. Harran was a frequent destination for Assyrian merchants who had close trade relations with Anatolia, especially during the Assyrian Trade Colonies period. The historical well in the enclosed area located to the north of the tomb of Sheikh Hayati el-Harrani outside the city walls of Harran is known as the Well of Hz.Yakub (Bir-i Yakup).
